Evaluation of Cyclic Fatigue as a Means of Assessing the Performance of Construction Joint Sealants: Silicone Sealants

Source

Five types of silicone based high performance construction sealant were subjected to cyclical movements using manually adjusted vices until rupture of the specimens occurred. Failure of these sealant specimens during cyclic fatigue testing allowed comparison with previously obtained results for silicone sealants. Sealant fatigue behavior was compared with the fatigue behavior of elastomers and rubbers in order to gain a more quantitative understanding of sealants subjected to fatigue testing. These results were used to give an assessment of sealant performance in relation to their dynamic fatigue life based upon sealant resistance to cyclic deformation.
