Use of Multifrequency Backcalculation for Determining Moduli of a Pavement Structure

Source

The use of multifrequency backcalculation can overcome the limitation on the maximum allowable number of layers in most static backcalculation programs. However, its convergence may break down when using high-frequency deflections with static estimation. Based on the dispersive characteristics of the surface waves, a newly developed procedure for estimating the seed moduli was implemented. The proposed method was then applied to three typical profiles. The numerical results show that surface wave estimation improves significantly the convergence of the backcalculation process even for pavement systems with high modulus contrast. It also overcomes the frequency limitation found in the static estimation.
