Application of NDE Data to Finite Element Analysis of Parts Containing Defects


Failure Analysis Associates®, Inc. (FaAA) has developed software that permits digital nondestructive evaluation (NDE) data to be input to finite element analysis. The code currently accepts input from X-ray computed tomography (CT) and digital ultrasonic inspections. Parameters measured nondestructively, such as CT density and ultrasonic attenuation, are automatically assigned to the integration points of a three-dimensional finite element model at the same spatial locations as in the actual part. These parameters are then used to modify the material properties input to the analysis in order to characterize anomalies in a part. FaAA successfully employed the code to analyze carbon-carbon cylinders containing intentional defects. The results of the analysis demonstrate the operation and application of the code. This approach to analysis of parts containing defects can form the basis of a system for automated and quantitative evaluation of anomalous parts.
