Flammability and Thermal Protection Testing of Long Underwear for Navy and Marine Corps Aircrew Use

Providing flammability and thermal protection to Naval and Marine Corps aircrew is a priority when developing and approving items for their clothing configuration. Currently, the components of the cold weather configurations are primarily made of Nomex®. It was the objective of this effort to determine if other natural or synthetic materials would be acceptable for use as the long underwear layer of these configurations in terms of flammability and thermal protection as well as increasing the comfort. Commercially available long underwear was purchased and tested for configuration compatibility, insulation value, immersed insulation value, moisture permeability, and flammability.
