Materials Selection: Multiple Constraints and Compound Objectives

Source

Systematic procedures for selecting candidate materials for an engineering component now exist. One class of these makes use of material indices and limits, which, when plotted on material-property charts, identify a subset of materials that optimally meet a given design specification. The procedure is straightforward when the design of the component specifies a simple objective (such as minimizing weight) and a single constraint (a specified stiffness, strength, or thermal conductance, for instance). But real components almost always must meet several conflicting constraints, and objectives are seldom simple and require compromise. This paper develops ways of dealing with multiple constraints and compound objectives within the framework of the material-index and property-chart method.
