Implementing the Terminology Interchange Format

Source

This paper suggests how one might use the Electronic Terminology Interchange Format (ETIF) to import and export terminology files. ETIF is currently under development in ISO Technical Committee 37, Terminology: principles and coordination, Sub-committee 3 for Computational Aids in Terminology. It is available as ISO DIS 12200, Computational Aids in Terminology — Terminology Interchange Format (TIF) — An SGML Application. The paper proposes a set of scenarios in which an individual or organization would desire to interchange terminology with other sources using different software and/or hardware platforms to record, store and manipulate terminological data. The discussion outlines the specific problems involved in converting such data from one environment to another and details the specific steps that a user would have to follow to implement such an interchange. The paper concludes by listing important addresses and resources that would be useful for anyone approaching this problem for the first time.
