Exchance of Standardized Terminologies within the Framework of the Standardized Terminology Exchange Network (STEN)

Source

Standardized terminologies created by national and international (ISO) standards organizations constitute a treasure of high quality terminological information that can be used for facilitating subject-area communication, documentation, and information retrieval, text management for subject-specific general texts and standards, and knowledge and technology transfer. Although increased activity in the area of terminology standardization represents a positive trend, failure to communicate among standardizing groups and to support international harmonization has resulted in duplication of effort and considerable terminological variation due to divergent scientific, technical, economic, and industrial development in different countries. Great savings could be realized if this information were readily accessible in the form of a worldwide data flow management system for standardized terminologies that would be sufficiently sophisticated to cope with the terminological, linguistic, and data-processing problems involved, while at the same time maintaining efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper discusses actual achievements among the Austrian Standards Institute (ON) and its Chinese (CSICCI), Russian (VNIIKI), and Japanese (JSA) counterparts.
