Centrifuge Simulation of Rayleigh Waves in Soils Using a Drop-Ball Arrangement


The experimental procedure defines a drop-ball arrangement, able to generate Rayleigh waves in flight that propagated in a centrifuged soil mass, in order to investigate the very difficult problems of surface wave propagation in a half-space that contains barriers, trenches, obstacles or a soft soil layer covered by stiff layers. Analysis of experimental results confirms the similitude of generating Rayleigh waves in centrifuge tests. The recorded signals can be properly interpreted in terms of true ground motion. Loss mechanisms responsible for seismic attenuation are analysed for granular and porous media. The proposed technique of in-flight falling-weight source provides a very simple means of applying a substantial transient force normal to the surface during the impact.
