Construction and Performance Using Cold In-Situ Recycling in New Mexico

Source

Results of a comprehensive evaluation of performance and costs of cold vin-situ recycling are reported. The process uses an equipment train to mill, screen, crush, mix with new binder, and place the material as a base for subsequent overlay. The equipment train occupies one lane of the roadway. New Mexico has completed over 120 projects using this approach since 1984. Condition surveys indicate these pavements will exceed the 10 year life assumed in design, with a few exceptions having specific deficiencies. Costs were evaluated in comparison to a mill and overlay rehabilitation method with an equal structural number on the basis of construction costs and estimated maintenance costs. Average savings were $7074 per lane-km ($11384 per lane-mi.) or $1.90 per m2 (1.59 per yd.2) in construction costs. Including maintenance costs the estimated savings were $7524 per lane-km ($12109 per lane-mi.) or $2.05 per m2 ($1.72 per yd.2).
