Measurement of Sensory Functioning and Integration Following Closed Head Injury

Source

A protocol for measuring sensory functioning and integration is discussed along with different approaches for examining the information collected. This protocol involves performing six variations of the Romberg test on a force platform. The six test conditions either eliminate sensory input or produce inaccurate visual and/or surface orientation inputs. Total, anterior-posterior, and medial-lateral sway are calculated from force platform center of pressure data. Five Romberg coefficients were formulated to determine the relative destabilizing effects of the last five test conditions. Center of pressure data were also subjected to a Fast Fourier Transform to examine the frequency spectrum associated with postural sway. Five frequency bands representing visual input, semicircular canal function, otolith function, and somatosensory input are evaluated. The results of studies examining each of these methods of evaluating sensory function and integration are presented.
