A Review of Test Methods Used in the Selection of Materials for Oxygen Service: Keynote Address

Source

This paper reviews the most frequently used methods to aid in the selection of materials for oxygen service. Many different test methods have been developed over the years. An engineer once said that all he needed was a match to determine if a material was suitable for oxygen use. Today, there are many tests available to the investigator as well as many different versions of the same test. A literature search revealed eleven tests for autogenous ignition, five tests for oxygen index, four tests for mechanical impact, eleven tests for pneumatic impact tests on materials and components, three heats of combustion, two for flat gasket combustion, two for oxygen aging of polymeric materials, one test specific for metals combustion, and five cleaning processes. This paper presents short summaries for many of these test procedures.
