Determination of Key Gyratory Compaction Points for Superpave Mix Design in Arizona

Source

As part of the Arizona Department of Transportation's effort to implement the findings of the Strategic Highway Research Program(SHRP) on volumetric asphaltic concrete mix design, a study is being conducted to evaluate the level of laboratory compaction necessary in the SHRP gyratory compactor to best simulate field density after various levels of traffic. The study considers pavements on Arizona's Interstate highway system. The projects studied were constructed under Arizona's quality assurance specifications, so the materials characteristics at the time of construction are known. Cores removed from these pavements, from two to six years after construction, were tested to determine bulk density, rice density, and then processed through the ignition furnace to determine asphalt content, gradation, fine aggregate specific gravity, and uncompacted voids. The salvaged aggregate from each project, along with a like binder, were combined to form laboratory mix for preparing SHRP gyratory specimens. Based upon an analysis of these results, a revision is recommended to the current SHRP gyratory compaction tables now used in Superpave mix designs.
