Critical Evaluation of the Superpave Performance Prediction Model for Permanent Deformation and Supporting Theory

Source

Superpave performance prediction models for permanent deformation were evaluated. Experimental design contained three unmodified asphalt binders, one Superpave level 1 mix design, and two aging procedures. Results of this study indicate that temperature, asphalt binder grade, and aging significantly affect mixture stiffness. The parameter m of the creep compliance equation which is used in the Superpave models as the slope of the permanent deformation equation is not reliable and should not be used to predict rutting. Pattern search method used to determine the Vermeer plastic properties failed to reach a solution in all cases. The parameter m and pattern search failure in the Vermeer model are, in part, responsible for unreasonable predictions.
