Influence of the Ball/Stem-Interface on the Load Bearing Capability of Modular Total Hip Endoprostheses


An extremely high level of mechanical reliability is required of total hip joint replacement systems. The reliability has to be proven in part by testing for resistance to static load using test tapers. There is evidence that the load bearing capability of the ball/stem-system is influenced by the surface structure of the taper. However, no systematic investigation is available in which this influence is studied in more detail. In the present study the surface structure of metal tapers is varied systematically in order to evaluate the influence of groove depth and pitch on the resistance to static load. Test tapers were produced from both a Titanium-alloy and a Cobalt-Chrome-alloy. The test results show that the burst strength increases with increasing “deformability” of the metal taper surface structure. A simple formula is put forward for estimating of the “deformability”.
