Coaches Safety Orientation and Training Skills Program

Source

Coaching is one of the crucial elements in the conduct of safe play in football at every level. The coach can have the greatest impact on safety and must be educated to make safety a priority in team management.

There is a trend in the professional education of coaches to reduce the professional preparation course work and to hire coaches with minimal education and training. On the recreational level, coaching credentials are minimal at best.

This paper explores the problems encountered in the coaching environment relating to football safety and the steps being taken to improve coaching education. The model used, herein, is the New Jersey State Legislation regarding the requirement for a program of “Safety and Skills Orientation” for volunteer coaches. It further proposes and recommends additional education and training for football coaches on all levels of play.
