Filters for Use in High Pressure Oxygen Service—Qualification and Test Methods

Source

Filters are very often used for oxygen equipment. Their role is normally to prevent downstream contamination of components by particles and dust, and thus may help to prevent ignition caused by particle impact or static electricity buildup. They also create a pressure drop upstream from internal components, which may help decrease the risk of ignition by adiabatic compression. However, filters are sometimes the cause of ignition. Lack of maintenance or poor design can lead to the creation of local restrictions or dead ends and thus increase the risk of ignition at the filter level due to adiabatic compression. They can also fail and suddenly release blocked contamination that can possibly cause ignition by particle impact. In this paper, we are proposing a test method to qualify some type of filters for oxygen service equipments. It is particularly important to check that they are able to resist particle impacts.
