Ethoxylated Linear Alcohols Affect Glyphosate and Fluazifop-p Spray Delivery, Retention, and Efficacy


Linear alcohol ethoxylate (LAE) surfactant enhancement of glyphosate [N(phosphonomethyl)glycine] phytotoxicity to wheat (Triticium aestivim) increased with an increase in ethylene oxide (EO) percentage from 40 to 80% for C8–10 and C12–14, but not for C16–18 linear alcohols. The C16–18 alcohols were more effective than the shorter chain alcohols with 40 or 60% EO, but not with 80% EO. LAE alcohol carbon chain length or percentage EO had less influence on fluazifop-P [ (R)-2-[4-[ [5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid] than glyphosate phytotoxicity to wheat. In general the greater the EO content of C12–14 and C16–18 linear alcohols the lower the percentage surfactant needed for efficacy with fluazifop — P. However, C8–10 alcohols were similarly effective with fluazifop-P regardless of percentage EO. LAE surfactants changed spray delivered to the treatment area but these changes did not account for differences in surfactant efficacy with either glyphosate or fluazifop-P. Spray retained by wheat generally decreased as alcohol carbon chain length increased for glyphosate, but not for fluazifop-P, based on vertically viewed leaf area image.
