Adjuvants Influence the Activity of Diuron and Norflurazon

Source

Adjuvant effects on weed control by diuron (N'-3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N,N-dimethylurea) and norflurazon [4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3(2H)-pyridazinone] were studied to explore the potential of adjuvants in enhancing activity of soil-applied herbicides and to examine the effect of a leaching-inhibiting adjuvant on herbicide efficacy. Several adjuvants at 5 mL L-1 significantly enhanced the control of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.) by diuron. Organosilicone based adjuvants were more effective than other adjuvants with Kinetic being the most effective. Kinetic in the soil also significantly enhanced norflurazon activity on yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca (L.) Beauv.), and the effect increased as Kinetic concentrations increased. Use of Kinetic with norflurazon allowed a 50% herbicide rate reduction to equal performance of the standard herbicide without adjuvant. Monazoline C had no effect on norflurazon efficacy regardless of the concentrations.
