Determining Concrete Masonry Unit Compressive Strength Using Coupon Testing


In 1990, provisions were added to ASTM Methods for Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units (C 140) to permit the evaluation of the compressive strength of concrete masonry units that were of an unusual size or shape, by cutting a rectangular coupon from the face shell. These provisions were added to permit evaluation of units whose shapes or size do not lend themselves to testing full-size and to accommodate limitations of testing equipment. The testing on which these provisions were based have not previously been published in a peer-reviewed journal or proceedings. This paper presents the results of two sets of testing programs that provided the basis for the development of coupon testing provisions. Since the provisions have been approved for use in ASTM C 140, two additional testing programs have been performed to evaluate those provisions. This paper evaluates the coupon testing provisions of ASTM C 140 with respect to the available data.
