Abrasive Wear Behavior of Unidirectional and Woven Graphite Fiber/Peek Composites

Source

The abrasive wear behavior of graphite fiber/polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites as a function of the fiber system and fiber orientation was investigated. The behavior of the two-dimensional woven fiber system was compared and contrasted with that of the unidirectional continuous fiber system and the neat matrix. Scanning electron microscopy of the worn surfaces and the sub-surface regions was carried out to determine the operating wear mechanisms and to explain relative differences in experimental results obtained with different fiber systems and orientations. Woven fiber systems improved the wear behavior of the neat matrix to almost the same extent as the unidirectional continuous fiber system. Finally, a modified rule-of-mixtures approach was successfully introduced to predict the abrasive wear behavior of the woven fiber composite from that of the unidirectional continuous fiber composite. A very good correlation of predicted results with experimental data was obtained.
