ASTM Awards 2016 Project Grants

Recognizing that students sometimes need financial assistance in completing graduate or senior capstone design projects, ASTM International annually offers a limited number of $500 grants to university students to help with projects that feature an ASTM standards component.  

 The following students have won 2016 project grants: 

  • Kristian Hogans, Florida State University - - Assessment of Laser Perforated Athletic Uniforms for Improved Thermal Comfort and Human Performance.
  • Mashaal Syed, Drexel University - - Surgeon Skills VR: Virtual Reality Simulator.
  • Nicholas Philips, Drexel University - - Autonomous Water Cleaning and Sensing Vessel.
  • Paige Taylor, Widener University - - Monitoring SEPTA’s Low-Clearance Railway Bridges.
  • Esmaeil Sadeghimeresht, University West (Sweden) - - Corrosion Behavior of Fe-Based Coatings Sprayed by High-Velocity Air Fuel (HVAF) Technique.

Students who wish to apply for 2017 project grants should submit an abstract describing their project, including:

  • Summary of the project goal.
  • List of ASTM standard that are being considered to achieve the project goal.
  • Declaring of intent to submit an application paper for publication by ASTM International upon completion of project.
  • Statement of endorsement for a faculty member.

Applications Sought for ASTM Graduate and Mather Scholarships

ASTM is now accepting applications for its graduate scholarships. The ASTM International Graduate Scholarship is presented each year to as many as four high potential graduate students, contingent on merit and available funds. The scholarship rewards graduate students who have demonstrated high levels of interest in or involvement with ASTM standards. Each scholarship recipient will receive $10,000 to be used for educational expenses. Applications are due April 30. Full-time undergraduate students completing their second/sophomore year of college, or later, or graduate students (specializing in cement or concrete materials technology) from any country are eligible to apply for the 2017 Katharine and Bryant Mather Scholarship, consisting of up to $7,500 of tuition assistance. The deadline for applications for the 2017 scholarship is April 30, 2017. ANSI Announces 2017 Student Paper Competition Focusing on “The World in 2050”

The American National Standards Institute has announced its sixth annual student paper competition as part of its ongoing efforts to spread awareness among postsecondary students of the strategic significance of standards and conformance. The competition calls for applicants for submissions that exemplify the 2017 theme: "The World in 2050."

Entries are due by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, April 28, 2017, and must be written and submitted by college or university student(s) at the associate, undergraduate, or graduate level enrolled in a U.S. academic institute of higher learning. The competition is open to both full and part-time students of all disciplines.

Papers must not exceed 2,000 words and must be formatted in accordance with the submission criteria in the paper competition flyer linked below. All submissions will be reviewed by top-level industry experts, and winning papers will be published online at  ANSI, StandardsBoostBusiness, StandardsLearn, and potentially in media outlets.

Cash prizes will be given to first- and second-place winners; ANSI reserves the right to award no prizes base the determination of the judges. Winning papers will be announced in June 2017.
