New Specification for Specification for Mineral Fiber Insulation Boards for Building Applications

1. Scope

1.1 This specification is for mineral fiber insulation boards used to insulate building walls, either exterior or interior, and ceilings. 1.2 The primary purpose of these insulation boards is either thermal or acoustical, or a combination of these. 1.3 For high temperature applications, use C612.

Keywords

mineral fiber boards, insulation boards, ambient use, thermal insulation, acoustical insulation

Rationale

There is currently only one ASTM specification for MF boards, namely C612. Although not in the title, this is clearly a specification for high temperature boards (from a low of up to 450 F to a high of up to 1800 F, with seven different Types). However, there are clearly many building applications, for which MF boards are specified, sold, and installed, where there aren't any high temperature performance requirements such as meeting C411 / C447, meeting C356, and having thermal conductivities over a wide range of mean temperatures.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
