The current adjunct is a reprint from 1960 and needs an update to meet the current fuels and specifications of the fuel industry. In collaboration with AD Systems, the new adjunct was developed in 2022 to represent modern fuels available today on the market. Examples of reference spots was taken by high resolution camera of the automated D4740 apparatus and all come from real fuels tested in the period 2019-2022. The new adjunct represents 3 examples of reference spot for each of 5 rating levels.
The draft of the new ADJ4740 was discussed and approved at the D02.14 June meeting in Denver. On December meeting in New Orleans a real specimen of the printed adjunct was demonstrated and discussed at the D02.14 Heavy fuels section, and was approved for the ballot. The new adjunct will be available from ASTM only as a printed hardcopy.
The balloted modifications to D4740 consist of the updated footnote 3 and addition of new Appendix with the example of the adjunct.
