ASTM WK86161

Revision of F1281-23 Standard Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene/Aluminum/Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX-AL-PEX) Pressure Pipe

Rationale

The F1281 Standard includes coverage for compatible gasses in the scope of the standard. I believe this coverage was intended for compressed air and similar gasses and not intended to convey fuel (and other combustible) gasses. If the material covered by F1281 were intended for use in the conveyance of fuel gasses within buildings, I believe the standard would include testing to ensure the integrity of the piping material and fittings in building fires. Resistance to fire is an essential part of determining equivalency to existing fuel gas piping as defined within the International Fuel Gas Code Section 105.2. The F1281 Standard does not include any similar requirements to demonstrate fire resistance, and therefore should be restricted to non-combustible gasses.
