New Guide for Determination of Detection Limits in Air Quality Methods

1. Scope

1.1 This guide provides criteria considerations for to be used in the determination and application of detection limits to be used in air quality methods, and ensure that the selected detection limits methodology is fit for the intended purpose.
1.2 This guide does not recommend a specific course of action but provides information on how to select the most appropriate course of action. It is recognized that fitness for the intended purpose depends on a variety of factors, including but not limited to applicable regulatory requirements, details of the test method involved, considerations for acceptability of false positives or false negatives, or both, data reporting requirements, and how the data will be used.
1.3 This guide does not address whether, when, or how data below the detection limit should be censored. References are provided for further reading on this topic.
1.4 This guide does not address calibration of instrumentation. It is assumed in this guide that successful calibration has been achieved in accordance with the requirements of the test method in question.
1.5 Units - The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Keywords

Detection limit; data reliability; air quality

Rationale

This guide is intended to provide information to help users understand the key concepts behind determination of detection limits, the different approaches available for making the determination, and when each approach would be most suitable based on fitness for the intended purpose. Such guidance is not currently available.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
