Revision of D6400-21 Standard Specification for Labeling of Plastics Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities

Rationale

There is a need for D6400, D6868 and D8410 to be in better sync with each other, since these three standard specifications address the requirements of compostable products and packaging.
Compostable products on the market are more complex structures than when D6400 and D6868 were developed. Products that are composed primarily of paper are still well suited to be assessed for compostability under standards D6868 or D8410. Items that are predominantly plastic with minor amounts of paper, or that have multiple components, are more appropriately assessed under D6400.
D6868 and D8410 allow biobased testing to satisfy biodegradation testing requirements for paper and fiber elements. D6400 currently requires biodegradation testing for paper and fiber elements and does not currently allow for the biobased test option. This ballot aligns the standards.
