New Guide for Measurement of Polyolefin Properties Using TD-NMR Relaxometry

1. Scope

The development of test methods, specifications, recommended practices, nomenclature, definitions, and the stimulation of research relating to plastics, their raw materials, components, and compounding ingredients, and to finished products made from plastics such as sheets, rods, tubes, pipes, cellular materials, and molded or fabricated articles.

Keywords

nmr; NMR relaxometry; polyolefin; polyethylene; polypropylene

Rationale

• A group of polyolefin producers, technology licensors and instrument manufacturers would like to establish a guideline which offers an overview of NMR Relaxometry based methods and addresses common ground and problematic issues.
• Material properties are critical key parameters for polyolefin producers’, converters’ and customers’ quality control. These properties are specified in sales contracts. Market requirements are becoming more stringent.
• In the last years polyolefin converters have started to investigate their raw materials, leading to a big change regarding requirements of the method. A guideline would help to meet these market demands.
• There is a need to ensure that the most relevant properties are measured and that a common technical language is established between the stakeholders.
• Although multiple industry norms have been developed to describe analysis of chemical and mechanical properties, practitioners still have no commonly agreed on methods and are therefore forced to develop their own approaches.
• There is a lot of room for interpretation of methodology leading to a lack of comparability between different producers, even when complying with current industry norms. This potentially hinders polyolefin manufacturers’ ability to effectively work and use the available measurement technology.
