The overhead conductor industry needs a Standard covering the multi-strand Carbon Fiber Thermoset Polymer Matrix Composite Core (CFC), which is widely-used in a product designated Aluminum Conductor Fiber Reinforced (AFCR) overhead conductor. The current Standard covers only single-strand CFC core.
Ballot History:
1) B01 (22-04) Closed November 21, 2022. Withdrawn after negative ballots requesting changes to existing requirements could not be reconciled with the existing stakeholders.
2) B01 (23-02)Closed June 16, 2023, withdrawn in error after the close date. The identical ballot was reissued as B01 (23-03)
3) B01 (23-03) Closed September 8, 2023, withdrawn based on a persuasive negative that is addressed in this revision request.
Proposed changes in the scope of this ballot:
• Correction of obvious and nonsubstantive errors in Rev 2020
• Changes necessary to apply ASTM B987 to stranded CFC:
o Provide a requirement for the galvanic protection layer thickness based on a well-proven design. No change is proposed for the protection layer thickness for the solid core option.
o Added Section 12.2 and Table 3 to provide direction for measuring stranded core diameter and tolerances for diameter and ovality of stranded CFC.
o Added a lay length requirement in a separate section.
o Added lay direction to Section 5, “Ordering Information.”
o Deleted Note 8 from prior revision proposals and covered the intent of Note 8 with specific requirements for stranded core.
o Added a definition for “stranded CFC”.
