Revision of C140/C140M-21 Standard Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units

Rationale

Within ASTM C140, the absorption procedure requires that balances must be accurate to 0.1% of the smallest specimen tested. (The exception to this is Annex A4 for concrete pavers, which has varying accuracy requirements based on specimen size.) Because of this blanket requirement, balances must be accurate to higher resolution for larger specimens than is required, and in many cases the accuracy is greater than the reporting requirements for the weights (currently 0.1 lb, again with pavers being the exception with accuracies of 0.002 lb to 0.01 lb depending on the specimens weight).

This ballot proposes to change this requirement to require accuracy of balances as well as recording and reporting tolerances based on the size of the specimen. This allows for greater control as well as more practical accuracy given the size of the specimen. This approach is similar to that currently in ASTM C140 Annex A4 for pavers. The annexes would still be able to specify a different tolerance if that is appropriate for the type of unit for which the annex applies.
