This standard is undergoing it’s 5-yr review. The timing device specified in 5.9 currently is required to be capable of indicating time to the nearest 1 min. This is not accurate enough as 7.6 requires the wiping off of the surface water to be completed within 10 s of removal from contact with the water and the weighing of the cube to be completed within 1 min.
An item similar to this ballot was previously balloted and received persuasive negatives. In that original ballot it was proposed the timing device be capable of reading to the nearest 1 s over a time period up to 24 h. The persuasive voters noted that it was not necessary for the timing device to be that accurate over that long of a time period because the standard already allows the readings to be made within ranges of ± 0.5 min at 0.25 h up to ± 15 min at 24 h.
The task group noted that the major concern on timing was during the wipe off and weighing procedure. These procedures are analogous to the ones in C140 for concrete masonry units for wiping off and weighing absorptions specimens. The current ballot item proposes to require the timing device to be readable and accurate to 1 s which is consistent with the requirements for the timer in C140.
