The proposed revision is to (A) add the term “accelerant” to the standard, and (B) update the terms from NFPA 921 to reflect 2021 Edition. The term “accelerant” currently exists in E1732 Section A [“General (Common) Forensic Science Terms”], but is slated to be removed from Section A. Originally, “accelerant” was not included in E3197, because it already existed in E1732. This revision will ensure that the term “accelerant” is retained through its inclusion in E3197, which will effectively make it eligible to move from Section A to Section B6 [“Terms for Fire Debris”] within E1732. In the process, a revision to the definition is also being proposed. The new definition carries the same information as the old definition, but is from a more widely used source (NFPA 921, 2021 Edition). This revision will also encompass an update of all terms that cite NFPA 921 to reflect the 2021 Edition.
