New Specification for Waterless Dielectric Coolants for Electric Vehicles.

1. Scope

1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers the requirements for waterless coolants used in electric vehicles. Coolants shall provide protection against corrosion and overheating.
1.2 The coolants governed by this specification are categorized as follows:
1.2.1 Coolant is a water intolerant fluid with a a high dielectric break down voltage and may also serve as an insulator within the electrical system.
1.3 Coolant may circulate directly within the vehicle’s battery or other vehicle components or may circulate through a cooling plate heat exchanger used to remove heat from batteries and other electrical components. Cooling plates consist of a metal plate with passages for the coolant to circulate.
1.4 Coolants in battery electric vehicles manage the heat loads within the vehicle and may serve to either cool or heat the batteries or electrical components.
1.5 Coolants shall be fully compatible with system components, including metals, polymers, and elastomers.

Keywords

Dielectric Fluids, battery electric vehicle, waterless coolant

Rationale

The coolants in this standard are designed with a high dielectrical beak down voltage. These coolants may be in direct contact with battery and electrical systems. The chemical composition of these coolants is not specified. This allows for flexibility in the design of these coolants. The coolant shall protect the systems from both corrosion and electrical short circuiting while providing for heat transfer. The current limit for water in set at 100 mg/kg. The actual water limit may be limited by the dielectric break down voltage.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
