New Guide for Additive Manufacturing of Metals -- Feedstock Materials -- Measurement and Classification of Feedstock Contamination

1. Scope

The purpose of this guide is to help producers and users of metal powder feedstock used in AM to identify and select a suitable test method for detecting and quantifying different types of contamination. This guide will outline typical types of contamination that might be present within metal powder feedstock used in AM, and contamination classification. The guide will provide an overview of test methods for detecting contamination, and possible workflow for powder cleanliness assessment.

Keywords

Metal powder; Cleanliness assessment; Contamination classification; Techniques for contamination detection

Rationale

Control of cleanliness of metal powder feedstock used in Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes is essential to ensure quality of final AM components. This standard is needed to guide users of metal powders for AM on identification and selection of test methods suitable for detecting, quantifying and classifying contamination. The standard will be used by users of AM machines to allow them to perform cleanliness assessment of unused powders and re-used powders.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
