Mechanical sampling systems typically have crushers to reduce the top size of the sample. Samples collected manually from coal seams, stockpiles, or conveyor belts sometimes mass greater than 100 kg (6 barrels or more). Crushing that much coal in a lab hammermill is often not practical. D2013 needs guidance on division of samples with top sizes larger than 4.76 mm (4 mesh). Obtaining a manageable sample mass from raw coal requires guidance on best practices to overcome these difficulties. Standard practices are needed so that coal lab technicians can easily formulate a practical plan for dividing large samples prior to crushing.
