Mechanical sampling systems typically have crushers to reduce the top size of the sample. Samples collected manually from coal seams, stockpiles, or conveyor belts sometimes mass greater than 100 kg (6 barrels or more). Crushing that much coal in a lab hammermill is often not practical. Obtaining a manageable sample mass requires guidance on best practices to overcome these difficulties. Standard practices are needed so that coal lab technicians can easily formulate a practical plan for dividing large samples. Division of samples with top sizes larger than 4.76 mm (4 mesh) is one of the biggest issues currently plaguing prep-crew the world over
