Revision of A706/A706M-16 Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain Low-Alloy Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement

Rationale

Previously in the early 1990s A706 was revised to A706/A706M. Table 1 was revised to add the equivalent metric properties to the Traditional Bar Sizes (#3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, #14, and #18). In addition to this, Table 1 was revised also to have a dual metric designation as well (#10, #13, #16, #19, #22, #25, #29, #32, #36, #43, and #57). Many domestic U.S. manufactures revised the bar markings by deleting the traditional bar size numbers and utilize these new metric bar size numbers on to the bar. This effort proved problematic because the vast majority of users still utilized the traditional bar designations. Consequently all manufactures have switch back to rolling only the traditional bar numbers onto bars. Currently, indicating a second set of SI designations provides no useful benefit, but can and does add to confusion with other bar designations such as those in Annex A1, Table A1.1 and also Canadian bar sizes such as #10M, #25M, which are not equivalent to the [#10] and [#25] of Table 1. To eliminate confusion the second dual designations, which are not rolled into the bars should be removed from Table 1 and throughout the Standard as applicable.
