New Guide for Premises Design Considering Snow and Ice Management for the Reduction of Pedestrian Falls

1. Scope

1.1 This guide covers design, planning, construction, renovation, maintenance, and risk management considerations of the physical exterior property with regard to snow and ice management for the purpose of reducing the risk of pedestrian falls. The provisions in this guide also apply to the analysis of existing properties. 1.2 Conformance with this guide will not completely alleviate the potential for slip and fall incidents caused by the presence or accumulation of snow and ice on walkways. However, conformance with this guide is intended to reduce the potential for such and thereby mitigate the risk to pedestrians. 1.3 UnitsThe values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of international Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
