Revision of A350/A350M-18 Standard Specification for Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel Forgings, Requiring Notch Toughness Testing for Piping Components

Rationale

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II adopts STM Specification A182, particularly Section 6.4 as written. During an ASME Survey, the definition of cylindrically shaped item was called into question. Since the term was not defined in SA-182, it was proposed that the term excluded anything that was not a perfect cylinder, for example, items with angles, reductions between one and the other, or sockets. A request for an Intent Inquiry and Code Revision was made to the ASME Section II Standards Committee on Materials as to the meaning of SA-182 regarding cylindrically shaped parts. The Committee agreed with the inquirer that certain deviations from a perfect cylinder were intended in SA-182 and an Intent Inquiry with Code Revision was processed to revise the wording in Section 6.4 to clarify the intent. In order to maintain alignment of ASME SA-182 and ASTM A-182 in this area, it is proposed that ASTM adopt the wording adopted in the Code Revision to SA-182. In addition, many years ago, a number of A01.22 specifications (which are also adopted as ASME Specifications) were revised to harmonize requirements across the Forging and Fitting specifications under its jurisdiction. Therefore, it is proposed that the words adopted by ASME be used in the following specifications currently using the term cylindrically shaped: A181, A350, A522, A960 and A961.
