New Guide for Whole Hemp Seed Storage at Primary Production Facilities

1. Scope

This guide can be used by hemp farmers, hemp seed processing companies and hemp agricultural extension agents to help manage against potential seed spoilage during storage. This applies to broadacre production of hemp seed intended for human consumption. This guide does not apply to hemp plants grown indoors or for purposes other than for harvesting of hemp seed intended for food within outdoor production conditions.

Keywords

hemp, hempseed, seed, safe storage, quality, food safety, moisture, spoilage

Rationale

Weather conditions during harvest in outdoor broadacre fields will affect optimum moisture levels of harvested hemp seed. This can result in higher moisture levels for stored seed, which can then affect quality aspects and potential spoilage. Agricultural engineering research in Canada was completed on methods used to dry hemp seed, including fans and heating equipment commonly used during storage of other oilseeds and cereal crops. This guide outlines recommendations resulting from research, in addition to agronomic practices recommended by hemp experts across regions of the world as was available. A guide intended for farmers (producers) is presented for review.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
