New Practice for Additive Manufacturing -- General Principles -- Standard Practice for Creating Data Sets Used in Metal Additive Manufacturing Standards

1. Scope

1.1 This Practice provides the methodology and requirements for establishing the specification minimums in material standards for metals created by additive manufacturing processes. Due to the significant difference between test methods and processing, this standard only applies to metallic materials. 1.2 This Practice takes into consideration that the test specimens that are used for material testing can be affected by the process conditions such as variation in feedstock, processing hardware and process parameters. 1.3 This Practice assumes that specification minimums are from bulk consolidation of the feedstock. 1.4 This Practice does not cover any feedstock testing and it is outside the scope of this Practice to establish a correlation between test specimens and part properties. 1.5 Units - The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. Temperatures are in Fahrenheit.

Additive manufacturing; powder bed fusion; directed energy deposition; sheet lamination

Rationale

There has been widespread disagreement on how to create specification minimum values for metal material standards in F42. The proposed standard Additive Manufacturing General Principles Standard Practice for Creating Data Sets Used in Metal Additive Manufacturing Standards establishes the number of test specimens, the processing conditions and the data analysis necessary to be included in the AM material standards. Due to the significant difference between test methods and processing, this standard only applies to metallic materials.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
