New Terminology for Suffixes to the PE Thermoplastic Pipe Material Designation (TPMD) Code for Polyethylene [Pipe and Fittings or Piping]

1. Scope

This specification covers supplemental suffixes that provide additional performance property requirements for PE pressure pipe and fitting compounds to the PE Thermoplastic Material Designation Code (TPMD Code) defined in F412.

Keywords

PE; PE 2708; PE 4710; pressure pipe; D3350; supplemental suffix; thermoplastic pipe material designation code

Rationale

Use 3rd discussion point from F412 definition code, thermoplastic material designation to establish definitions for TMDC currently listed in PPI TR-4 (PE 1404, PE 2708, PE3608, PE3708 and PE 4710) minimum properties. New standard will refer to Table 1 of D3350 for density and slow crack growth properties requirements. Address the improving performance of PE pressure pipe compounds by establishing the concept of a suffix system. For example, a PE-RT performance would be addressed by defining R as resistant and T as higher temperature. A T table would be created in the standard with the higher temperature HDB (180F) requirement. Thus, a PE 4710-RT, would become the new thermoplastic material designation code for a PE 4710 with an established 180F HDB. Similarly, a PE 2708 with RT performance would become a PE 2708-RT. The standard will also likely incorporate by text or reference to another document prior generation materials (PE 2406, PE 3408, PE 3710, and PE 4708).

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
