Revision of C1194-19 Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Architectural Cast Stone
Rationale
ASTM C1364 requires compression testing be performed at 28 days after manufacture. ASTM C1194 requires the cubes to be dry prior to compression testing, but this can take some trial and error to determine when to start the oven-drying process to ensure they are dry. Because not all mixes are the same, drying times can take 48 to 96 hours, thus extending compression testing beyond 28 days. This ballot proposes to start the oven-drying process at 28 days. Once the cubes go into the oven, curing dramatically slows as any water that would be needed for curing is driven off. Hence, even though compression testing may occur at a date beyond 28 days after casting, what is actually measured is closer to 28 days of age. This ballot also proposes to allow the client to dictate when to start the drying process if different than at 28 days of age. This provides flexibility to the client should they want data before or after 28 days of age. Finally, a maximum time allowed to test the cubes after capping and updated reporting requirements are added.
