New Practice for Measurement of Sound Pressure Level Differences and Decay Curves using the Impulse Response Method with Swept Sinusoidal Signals

1. Scope

This practice introduces the steps necessary to carry out measurements using the impulse response method with sweep signals to obtain sound pressure level differences and energy decay curves. The provided information includes the generation of the test signals, the measurement procedure and the post-processing steps to obtain the desired result. An important goal of the practice is to provide clear rules and recommendations for the measurement procedure that will enable consistent results. A verification process to ensure agreement with the established noise method is also given.

Keywords

Impulse Response; Sweep

Rationale

The impulse response method using sweep signals is currently not allowed by any measurement standard, despite long-established and clear evidence that it provides superior performance compared to a measurement with noise signals. Other relevant standards (e.g. E90, E336, E2235, C423) can then reference this practice.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
