This Standard Practice is designed to promote clarification and consistency for the identification, representation and naming conventions of waterways in the United States and its territories to improve synchronization and multipurpose application for all stakeholders. This document identifies and clarifies waterway representations that include types, hierarchical structure, configuration, geometric boundaries, defining attributes and other descriptive characteristics. This Standard Practice is designed to support consistent representation and identification of waterways in the United States and its territories to support applications and data by leveraging currently available information, cross reference where appropriate, then collaboratively establishing, defining and identifying supplemental guidance to support both government services and industry interests. In addition to promoting multi-agency coordination and industry/government harmonization, this Standard Practice is designed to enable enhanced commercial application and product development, for broader maritime application in support of safe, resilient and efficient navigation, for maritime operations.
