This standard will be for technology to prevent or limit drowning fatalities in residential swimming pools. This technology goes beyond an entry (pool or fence) alarm to assess types of activity and behavior under different swimming pool conditions.
water safety; drowning prevention; pool alarm; sensor; child; baby; backyard; pool; detection; death; non-swimmer; spa; hot tub; water; homeowner; outdoor pool; indoor pool
This standard is needed because there is a new proliferation of technology available in the consumer marketplace that claims to prevent drowning without an established performance standard. If these products do not meet a baseline standard, there is a greater risk of drowning fatalities because individuals (parents) become complacent, believing the technology provides more protection than it does. Establishing a product standard is imperative as a matter of public safety.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
