New Test Method for Water Resistance of Resilient Flooring

1. Scope

1.1.This test method is intended to quantitatively measure the effects of water on resilient flooring immediately following submersion in liquid water. This test method is not intended to measure the effects of long-term liquid water exposure. 1.2.This test method is meant to simulate conditions that resilient flooring may be exposed to after installation, especially during water emergencies, and reflect a worst case scenario. As such, there may be other factors, such as organic growth potential, that may preclude a flooring products use from wet environments or may require its removal despite its resistant to water damage. 1.3.Although this test method is specifically intended for resilient flooring, it may be useful for assessing the water or moisture resistance of other flooring materials. 1.4.The values given in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale

Rationale: Currently, there is no stand-alone established method for determining the water resistance of resilient floor coverings. Efforts have been made to incorporate some water resistance test methods into the ASTM F3261 standard specification, but this only addresses thickness swell and not the other characteristics that can also be altered in water-sensitive flooring materials, such as the length, width, curl, water absorption and changes in appearance. This test method seeks to expand upon the water resistance test method within ASTM F3261.
