Revision of D5550-14 Standard Test Method for Specific Gravity of Soil Solids by Gas Pycnometer
Rationale
A minor revision was recently balloted to add guidance for preparation and analysis of soils with a liquid limit of 25 or greater. These materials should be added to the pycnometer while still hot from the drying oven and allowed to come to thermal equilibrium with the pycnometer prior to commencement of analysis. That was the only revision to be made at that time. Two negative ballots, and several affirmative with comments, were received, many of which dealt with compliance with the most-recent version of the Committee D18 Standards Preparation Manual. A decision was made at the last meeting of Subcommittee D18.03 to make those revisions at this time, along with transfer of some mandatory information from notes into general text of the Test Method. There was some clarification needed as some felt that two methods were being described here, when in fact two different configurations of instruments can be used interchangeably to perform this single test method. The Subcommittee respectfully requests your affirmative vote on this thorough revision of the Test Method.
