New Test Method for Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates in Plastics

1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers the determination of fatigue crack growth rates, from Kth to unstable crack growth, using linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. Results are expressed as the material constants C and m in Paris law, as well as the threshold stress intensity factor Kth.

Keywords

fatigue crack propagation; UHMWPE; plastics; PEEK; Paris regime

Rationale

This test method will be useful for manufacturers of load-bearing polymeric implants that may be subjected to loads that could result in crack generation. It will be used for material development and regulatory submissions. End users will include consolidators, medical device manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
