New Specification for Magnetic Pure Iron

1. Scope

This is a new specification for grading and acceptance of Magnetic Pure Iron having a maximum Carbon content of 0.006%.

Keywords

electromagnet; core; yoke; pole; magnetic shielding

Rationale

This draft standard is for a new ASTM standard specification covering magnetic pure iron having a carbon content of no more than 0.0060% and typical total iron content of 99.9%. In contrast to low carbon iron alloy type 1 and type 2 covered by ASTM A848, which are characterized by coercive field strength, users characterize magnetic pure iron by its high maximum relative permeability and magnetic polarization. It is the absence of alloying elements in the material’s composition that enables its superior magnetic properties.

Current industry usage is specified by tradename or vendor. The absence of a suitable standard specification mitigates the use of magnetic pure iron where standardized magnetic characteristics are required for design and modeling of magnetic components and shielded enclosures. While the material meets the requirements of ASTM A848, the differences in critical material properties, and the requirements thereof, warrant the development of a new standard. Ultimately, it is to the benefit of the user community that a traceable standard specification be created to define the magnetic characteristics of magnetic pure iron.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
