ASTM WK75153

New Specification for Polyethylene (PE) Pressure Pipe Bends (Elbows) in Nominal Diameters 8-inch to 36-inch (219mm 915mm), Fabricated From Thick Wall Gore-Pipe by Heat Fusion Joining of Miter-cut or Machined Segments, or by Thermo-Forging

1. Scope

1.1This specification covers requirements and test methods for material, gore-pipe and bend dimensions and tolerances, hydrostatic qualification, bend pressure design, chemical resistance, and rapid crack resistance of fabricated polyethylene gore-pipe and bends (elbows) for use in water or fuel-gas pipe-mains for direct burial and re-liner applications. The pipe and fittings covered by this specification are intended for use in the distribution of water, natural gas and vaporized petroleum gas liquids, as well as regulated oil-and-gas gathering pipe systems. 1.1.1The dimensions for miter-bends, machined bends, and thermo-forged bends covered by this specification are intended for use with AWWA C906 pipe, ASTM F714 pipe, ASTM D 2513 pipe, as well as polyethylene pipe specified within ASTM F2619/F2619M for pressure or non-pressure oil and gas producing applications to convey hydrocarbon fluids such as crude or refined oil, dry or wet gas, multiphase oil-water fluids, and brackish or non-potable oilfield water. The bends for each of the above applications shall be fabricated from pipe made in accordance with the standard related to the bends application. 1.2This bend dimensional and design specification covers elbows which are joined to the polyethylene pipe-main by heat butt-fusion, electrofusion couplers, or mechanical couplers. The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and Appendixes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the specification. 1.3The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 6, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Keywords

Miter-bend, mitered elbows, elbows, ells, fabricated elbows, plastic elbows, gore-pipe, gore-pipe segments, tangent ends, polyethylene, polyethylene elbows, fabricated bends, bend, half-bend, quarter-bend, eight-bend, Geometric Strength Ratio, GSR, single miter-bends, multiple miter-bends, PE2708, PE4710, pressure pipe, HDPE, MDPE

Rationale

This is widely useable for Water Distribution, fuel gas, and Industrial applications. The dimensions are the same and the construction is the same for all industries. The full pressure rating is a matter of geometry reinforcement of the intrados stress field at the fusion joint..

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
