Revision of D4048-19a Standard Test Method for Detection of Copper Corrosion from Lubricating Grease

Rationale

The current method specifies that the container should be removed from the oven and allowed to cool to room temperature. This is different from D130 which says that the sample should be removed immediately and evaluated with 5 minutes of removal from the heated bath. It is the technical judgement of the G.01 subcommittee that the longer period of time that the strip is in contact while the grease cools will increase reproducibility issues and that the strip should be taken out and evaluated immediately to reduce variability in the test procedure. Proposed changes: Current: 9.5 At the end of the test period, remove the containers(s) from the oven or liquid bath and allow them to cool to room temperature. Proposed: 9.5 At the end of the test period, remove the containers(s) from the oven or liquid bath. Current: 9.6.1 Wearing impervious gloves (see Note 3), or using stainless steel forceps, remove the strip from the grease, and carefully remove excess grease clinging to the strip. Proposed: 9.6.1 Wearing impervious gloves (see Note 3), or using stainless steel forceps, immediately remove the strip from the grease, and carefully remove excess grease clinging to the strip. Add (and renumber rest of notes accordingly): Note 5 - Caution: copper strip will be hot and should be handled with care.
